Every year, on 8th March, we celebrate International Women’s Day. It is a day to celebrate the achievements of women, and to raise awareness of gender equality.
This year’s theme is: Choose to Challenge
This speaks strongly to me, especially this year. I am finally in a position that I can speak up and have my voice heard. The previous industry I worked in was toxic, especially to women and to those who did not conform to gender or sexuality expectations.
It pains me to admit that I’ve never given this day much thought. I didn’t have the empowerment to celebrate my voice. My voice was never heard, so I rarely spoke. This year was a new start for me. And I am taking the opportunity to reforge my voice, and to #choosetochallenge.
IWD may only be one day, but we are all responsible for challenging the wrongs in our world, every day. As they say on the IWD website: a challenged world is an alert world and from challenge comes change. There’s a lot of empowering content, so I recommend you check out the site: https://www.internationalwomensday.com/
Today, and every day, I choose to challenge injustice and the discrimination of women in the workplace. I choose to challenge gender bias and inequality. I choose to challenge those who believe that “women” are only those assigned female gender identities at birth. I choose to challenge the ridiculous concept that some people are “lesser” in some way. I choose to celebrate the achievements of the amazing women in and out of my workplace. I choose to challenge those who would silence our voices.
What will you challenge?
